What is a Histiocytoma?

A few weeks ago, I found what appeared to be a red hairless raised lump on Tuna’s neck. It was small at first and I thought it was a bite. Tuna tends to have sensitive skin so I didn’t really think much of it. As the weeks went by, I started to see that the lump would get bigger and start protruding out more and still hairless. It started to look like a skin tag and I thought at that point since it was getting bigger, it might be time to get it checked out.

Come to find out that it could be two things, a Histiocytoma or a Mast Cell Tumor. A Mast Cell Tumor is a cancerous cell and when I heard the work cancer I flipped. It was too small to test, they were afraid that if we tested it the result would come back inconclusive because of the size. He is too young for a skin tag, so that was ruled out. So I crossed my fingers and hoped it was a Histiocytoma not a cancerous tumor.

A histiocytoma in the dog is a benign tumor. It is an abnormal growth in the skin of histiocytes (histiocytosis), a cell that is part of the immune system. A similar disease in humans, Hashimoto-Pritzker disease, is also a Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Dog breeds that may be more at risk for this tumor include Bulldogs, Scottish Terriers, Greyhounds, Boxers, and Boston Terriers.

Most commonly histiocytomas are found in young dogs and appear as a small, solitary, hairless lump, although Shar Peis may be predisposed to multiple histiocytomas.They are most commonly found on the head, neck, ears, and limbs, and are usually less than 2.5 cm in diameter.

I had to make the decision at that point to get it removed. If they removed it they could send it in to get checked out and I would find out the results of the biopsy in 3 business days.

We were very lucky to find out that it was infact a Histiocytoma, a benign tumor. Phew!

I wanted to share this with you all because it was probably the most traumatic thing to happens to us do far. Tuna is 15 months old and the thought of cancer just broke my heart. I never knew what a Histiocytoma was or that Tuna could get it. So if you see a hairless red lump on your little pooch, take them in immediately to get it checked out. Tuna is finally feeling better and I can breath again. :)
